What Can Be Made from Felt?

Felt is an incredibly versatile material that can be used to create a remarkable variety of products.

Feltmaking dates back approximately 6,000–8,000 years to the domestication of sheep.

Early feltmaking nomadic and shepherding communities produced blankets, storage bags, hats, boots, stockings, coats, and many other everyday items.

Today, feltmakers create clothing and accessories such as dresses, vests, footwear, scarves, hats, gloves, and hand warmers, as well as home décor items including rugs, blankets, cushions, seat pads, and wall hangings. Felt is also widely used to make decorative objects, toys, puppets, storage solutions, and bags.

Thanks to its outstanding insulating properties, felt is also an important industrial material and has even been used as insulation in NASA spacecraft.
